The High Ridge Civic Center has a new multipurpose court ready for use, and Jefferson County Parks Director Tim Pigg said bathroom renovations and a new pavilion will be completed soon.
“On one side, we have three pickleball courts, and on the other side we have a combination of a basketball court and a hockey court,” Pigg said.
Previously there was a court at the Civic Center, 2700 Community Lane, but it was only for hockey and, before that, only for tennis. However, the court had fallen into disrepair and wasn’t getting much use, Pigg said.
That has changed.
“We’ve got a lot of people using it now,” Pigg said.
The new court, which is 12,500 square feet, was finished in mid-September and is open every day from dawn until 10 p.m., when lights at the court are turned off.
No reservations are needed to use the facility.
“It’s first-come, first-served,” Pigg said. “We ask that people share.”
Pigg said due to COVID-19 health concerns, completion of the bathrooms has been delayed.
“I’m anticipating it to be done by the end of this month,” he said.
Pigg said the bathrooms are being renovated to include touchless technology.
The entire project cost $111,158, he said.
Pigg said the asphalt overlay cost $14,050, but the Jefferson County Parks Foundation covered half that bill.
Three pickleball nets cost a total of $1,700, two hockey nets cost a combined $160, two basketball nets cost a total of $3,698, painting the court cost $6,525 and new fencing totaled $5,100, he said.
The new pavilion will cost $52,690 and the bathroom renovations will total $27,235, he said.
Pigg said the pavilion will be west of the multipurpose courts on a 1.05-acre lot the Parks Department purchased in January 2019 for $43,000.
Pigg said he is happy to have people already using the court.
“Especially nowadays, there’s just not that many places for kids to go,” he said.
Pigg said the project started after Jefferson County Executive Dennis Gannon recommended the parks department add more pickleball courts in the county.
Pigg also said County Council member Brian Haskins has challenged Gannon to a pickleball match at the Civic Center, and the match may take place next spring.
