Jefferson County saw three COVID-19-related deaths in December, bringing the total number of deaths from the virus to 17 this respiratory season, which began Oct. 1 and runs through mid-May, the Jefferson County Health Department reported.

Nine COVID-19 deaths were reported in October and in November, five were reported. Two cases were reported the week of Dec. 17 and one was reported the week of Dec. 24, according to the Health Department.

From Oct. 1 to Dec. 30, the county saw 3,632 COVID cases. During that same time period, 313 flu cases were reported, with 224 Type A cases and 89 Type B cases, the Health Department reported.

No flu-related deaths have been reported this respiratory season.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone 6 months and older get the recently updated COVID-19 vaccine to protect against the potentially serious outcomes of the illness

In addition, the CDC recommends a flu shot each season for anyone 6 months and older.
