More than 30 local businesses are participating in the Arnold Chamber of Commerce’s first-ever Snowman Decorating Contest.
“We are very pleased to have such a great response to our first time trying this project,” said organizer Meredith
McCarthy, a branch manager at the Arnold Branch of the Jefferson County Library and member of the chamber’s board of directors. “We are looking forward to seeing great displays and pictures of people enjoying them.”
Those who’d like to check out the snowmen at the various businesses may get a map dotted with snowflakes indicating their locations. The maps are available through the Arnold Chamber of Commerce website at arnoldchamber.org.
For the contest, which will run through Dec. 31, the chamber asked businesses to create a snowman or snowman-themed display – either a free-standing display or a window display. The businesses emailed photos of the displays to the chamber.
The chamber will create a photo album on its Facebook page, giving people a chance to “like” the creations. The display that receives the most “likes” between Dec. 14-28 will win, netting the business a trophy and a package filled with about $300 in prizes donated by local businesses, McCarthy said.
She said the businesses that get the second and third most votes also will receive gift cards.
McCarthy said the chamber encourages people to participate in a snowman scavenger hunt, using the map from the chamber’s website.
As part of the hunt, people are asked to visit the businesses with snowmen displays and take photos with them to post on Facebook with the hashtag
#ACOCSnowmen.
The chamber will randomly draw participants’ names and award $25 gift cards to local restaurants to an undetermined number of people who post photos.
McCarthy said the business winners and scavenger hunt winners will be notified in January.
She said the chamber received $5,000 from Arnold’s Tourism Commission to help advertise the event.
