If eating at Shelly’s Kindred Fare restaurant in Crystal City reminds customers of dining at home, co-owner Shelly Kemper says it is no coincidence.
“It’s kind of where ‘Kindred Fare’ comes from,” Kemper said. “These are all my family’s recipes. Basically, it’s the family stuff we had at home.”
The restaurant opened July 31 at 514 Bailey Road. Kemper’s husband, Lance, is the other owner.
The restaurant’s menu offers sandwiches, smothered burgers, flatbread pizzas, snack plates, homemade soups, salads, desserts and more.
“I would call it a home-style menu,” Shelly Kemper said. “We’ve not yet determined a customer favorite. I’d say the chicken noodle soup has been a hit. The baked ham & cheese minis are getting rave reviews.
“My favorite item is the Greek olive and feta snack plate, because it reminds me of my late, great Uncle George, who was of Greek heritage.”
In addition to the regular menu, Kemper said the restaurant offers a specialty item every day.
“We’ll have something different available for dinner every night,” she said. “Tonight (on Aug. 1), we’re having lasagna, which is not on the regular menu. Dinner starts at 4 p.m.”
The restaurant also has a variety of beverages on the menu.
“We do have a full espresso bar available,” Kemper said. “We have a selection of wine, beer and spirits.”
Shelly’s Kindred Fare is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays.
“We have online ordering and delivery,” said Kemper, 49.
Kemper said she spent three decades in the restaurant business before she and Lance, 45, opened Shelly’s Kindred Fare.
“I’ve been in restaurants for 30 years,” she said. “I decided to open my own place.”
She said the restaurant has a staff of 25 and seating for 60.
The Kempers are renting the space for the restaurant, Kemper said.
Kemper said she and her husband want to create a casual ambience.
“We want to be a place where you can come in and get a good meal or where you can come in and relax and let our servers take care of you,” she said.
The Kempers, who live in Crystal City, hope to eventually expand their business.
“We would like to open other locations in the future,” Shelly Kemper said.
