The Oak Valley Golf Course & Resort, formerly the Teamsters Health and Medical Camp, is now part of Pevely.
The Pevely Board of Aldermen voted 7-0 Monday to approve the owners’ petition for annexation into the city.
“I’m very excited they’re here,” Mayor Stephanie Haas said.
City officials said there was no public opposition to taking in the 317-acre tract at 1230 Abbey Lane, which previously was part of unincorporated Jefferson County, just east of Pevely.
City Administrator Todd Melkus said the property officially became part of Pevely when the board approved the voluntary annexation.
Co-owners Tauqeer Haider, 55, and Younus Shah, 46, both of St. Louis County, bought the property a few years ago from Teamsters Local 688 Insurance & Welfare Fund Board of Trustees.
Haider, listed on the annexation ordinance as managing member of Riverside Fairways Property Management LLC, did not attend the meeting, but on Tuesday, he said it was his goal all along to have Pevely annex the property.
“We really want to be part of the Pevely community,” Haider said. “(City officials) are very supportive. We want to get on their water and sewer systems.”
The property currently gets water from its own wells and has its own septic system, Melkus said.
Haider said he believes his business will be able to proceed with improvements to the property quicker by going through the Pevely municipal government rather than the county government.
Pevely officials said the city will benefit from additional tax revenue from Oak Valley, although they only have rough estimates for how much the business will generate, especially since Oak Valley is just getting off the ground and renovating the property.
“The estimation is $5,000 a year in real estate tax,” Melkus said. “We have no idea on sales tax (on memberships and other usage fees).”
Haider said initial marketing of Oak Valley has gone well and the facility is attracting public interest.
“I’m pleased with the response,” he said. “The people are liking it.”
Haider said much of the Oak Valley facility will remain open while the remodeling and renovations continue, including the golf course, pavilions, RV campsites and fishing lakes.
“We’re opening the pool area over the Memorial Day weekend,” he said.
Some of the improvements planned for the property include rehabilitating the clubhouse (including adding 4,000 square feet to it) and constructing an outside facility for weddings and other gatherings. Renovations to a building near the clubhouse will turn it into modernized suites for lodging.
Haider said he believes Oak Valley will attract business to the entire community and offer the community a place to enjoy outdoor activities.
“We will bring more people to the area,” he said.
The facility’s roots can be traced back to the 1960s, Haider said.
Ward 1 Alderman Steve Markus was absent from the meeting.
