The Hillsboro R-3 School District community is mourning the loss of student Caleb Scanlon, who died April 3 after a long bout with cancer.

Caleb was 13 and a seventh-grader at Hillsboro Junior High School.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Caleb’s family and his friends,” Hillsboro R-3 Superintendent Jon Isaacson said.

Hillsboro Junior High Principal Heath Allison and Hillsboro Intermediate Principal Scott Readnour helped set up a memorial in front of Hillsboro Intermediate School along Business 21 to honor Caleb's memory.

The memorial includes signs that say, “#ScanlonStrong,” flowers and other items.

“It’s items of remembrance,” Isaacson said.

The school district posted information about the memorial on its Facebook page on April 3 and encouraged people to leave items at the memorial.

Caleb was the son of Sara (Harston) and Jefferey Scanlon of Hillsboro. He also is survived by his sister, Grace, and other family members.
