De Soto flood cleanup

De Soto's flash flood provided a surprise gift. James Blum, 15, and Liza Reeves are collecting nightcrawlers from the floodwater at the corner of DeWitt and E. Kingston. Worms come up to the surface in high water.

The city of De Soto is asking residents who were affected by the flooding of Aug. 15 and need assistance to call De Soto City Hall at 636-586-3326.

Volunteer groups from two organizations, the Christian Aid Ministry and the Jefferson Baptist Association will be in De Soto today and tomorrow (Aug. 18-19), Public Works director Kevin Warden said.

“People have been calling the city asking for help. We can’t give any monetary help, but there are two groups here and they do a great job of cleaning up, removing debris, cleaning basements and addressing mold issues,” Warden said. “They don’t do it to get paid. They do it because they have a great heart.

A team from Hannibal with the Christian Aid Ministry has a trailer set up in Walther Park and will be in De Soto through tomorrow. The Jefferson Baptist Association Disaster Relief Mud Out Unit also will be in De Soto to help starting today.

Residents who call the city will be asked to provide their name, address, phone number and the type of help they need, Warden said.

“This is a time-sensitive request and we ask that residents contact City Hall as soon as possible,” he said.

Residents can also call 314-609-8868 to speak to Warden or call the Police Department at 636-586-8891 to get help.
