Festus Library closed due to water main on West Main Street

City of Festus employees attempt to fix a water main break they were alerted to about 5 a.m. They were still working on it at 10 a.m. and city officials hope the water main will be repaired a couple hours from that time.

The Festus Public Library closed this morning, Aug. 3, because of a water main break on West Main Street. The library will remain closed until repairs are completed, officials said.

Festus Main Street also is closed at the work site in front of the library, 400 W. Main St.

Matt Unrein, the Festus public works director, said the city received a call about the water main break at about 5 a.m. Repair work was ongoing at 11 a.m.

“It’s an 8-inch water main and we hope to have it repaired in the next couple of hours,” Unrein said. “We believe it can be fixed by putting a sleeve on it and not shut off anyone’s water, and there is no boil water advisory.”

He said that some customers in the area around the water main break may have low water pressure until the repairs are completed.

“We have had a number of water main breaks in the last couple of weeks,” Unrein said. “Because it’s so dry, the soil contracts and causes the breaks.”
