Crowds lined Festus Main Street on June 5 to watch the Mayor’s Summer Car Cruise, which included dozens of vehicles, said Barb Lowry, the Festus tourism and recreation director.
The event was the first city-sponsored car cruise in Festus since September 2019. Typically, two car cruises are held in the city each year, but they were canceled last year because of COVID-19.

The event, which is sponsored by both the city and the Festus Tourism Commission, kicked off that afternoon with a car show on the Festus Public Library parking lot, 400 W. Main St., with the car cruise that evening.
“The library lot was full of cars at the car show. I didn’t count, but the library lot was full,” Lowry said.
“There were dozens of cars. The car show started to thin around 4 p.m., but I’d say around 4:30, 4:45, it was full again for the car cruise.”
She said the event went well.
“I don’t remember many empty spots up and down Main Street,” she said. “I’d say hundreds lined the streets to watch. And, there was a stream of cars from roughly 6-10 p.m.”
Lowry said the First United Methodist Church of Festus-Crystal City, 113 Grand Ave. (across the street from the Festus Public Library parking lot), also offered activities during the event, including a musical performance and a snow cone stand.
The Mayor’s Fall Car Cruise is scheduled for Sept. 18.
“Hopefully, we’ll have the same great weather so everybody can put their tops down and have a great evening,” Lowry said.
