American Legion Post 400 in Fenton is inviting veterans and other members of the public to a fish fry and mural unveiling on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11.
Legion assistant finance officer Mike Masters of Imperial, a Navy veteran, said the fish fry will run from 3-7 p.m., and the mural unveiling is at 5 p.m., both at the Legion hall, 2 Gravois Road, in Fenton.
A fish dinner will cost between $12 and $15, Masters said.
He said people have commented about how nice the mural looks.
“It’s an American flag with silhouettes of a person representing each branch of the service with an American Eagle also on it, and there’s a rifle with a helmet on it representing the people who died in battle,” he said. “It’s a memorial to honor all branches of the service.”
Masters said the mural is on the east side of the building, which faces the Meramec River.
He also said that people coming from Minnie Ha Ha Park on the bridge can see the mural.
Masters said Joel Kirk of Off the Wall Murals painted the mural for $1,000.
In addition, Tesson Roofing donated materials and the company’s employees volunteered time to prepare the wall for the mural.
Masters said the wall was made of cinder blocks and the roofing company covered it with a flat material that made it easier to paint.
He said Kirk and Tesson Roofing representatives will be at the event.
Masters said he got the idea for the mural last Veterans Day after seeing other Legion posts decorated with murals and thought it would be nice to have one at the Fenton post, which needed something to make it stand out.
“Our building is just kind of bland,” he said. “We are here, but people don’t really know we are here.”
Masters said the about half of the Fenton post’s members live in Jefferson County.
“Some of them live down Gravois Road down in the House Springs, Cedar Hill area,” he said. “Being right on the border of Jefferson County in St. Louis County we kind of get both.”
