Voters rejected the tax measures the Eureka Fire Protection District and the Meramec Valley R-3 School District had on Tuesday’s ballot. The Meramec Valley Ambulance District’s bond issue, however, passed, according to unofficial election results.
Eureka Fire was seeking a tax increase of 34 cents per $100 assessed valuation, which voters narrowly rejected. The issue, called Proposition F, required a simple majority to pass, and it failed with 1,191, or about 50.11 percent, of voters in Jefferson and St. Louis counties opposing it, and 1,186, or about 49.89 percent, of them voting for it.
Meramec Valley R-3 was seeking a $36 million bond issue. The measure would not have increased the district’s tax levy but would have extended its debt for an undetermined amount of time.
The measure, called Proposition M, required a 4/7th majority, or 57.14 percent, vote to pass. The majority of voters in Franklin, Jefferson and St. Louis counties were in favor of the bond issue, but not enough to cross the 4/7th majority threshold. Prop M received 1,402, or about 54.17 percent, yes votes, and 1,186, or about 45.83 percent, no votes.
The Meramec Ambulance District’s $13 million bond issue narrowly passed, receiving just slightly more votes than the required 4/7th majority needed for approval.
Voters in Franklin, Jefferson and St. Louis counties approved the measure, with 1,736, or about 58.31 percent, yes votes, and 1,241, or about 41.69 percent, no votes.
In the Rockwood School District, Mara Vorachek-Warren and Sarah Boyer were elected to the Board of Education. Former board member Izzy Imig also appeared on the ballot, but on March 11, she had resigned from her seat and said she no longer wanted to retain her seat on the board, but that decision came too late to remove her name from the ballot. Her resignation and withdrawal from the race came after she had been accused of stealing from Target stores in Ballwin and Chesterfield.
Vorachek-Warren received a total of 7,733 votes, or about 42.10 percent, and Boyer won 9,077 votes, or about 49.41 percent, in St. Louis and Jefferson counties. Imig received 1,556 votes, or about 8.47 percent, and there were six write-in votes from Jefferson County.
Eureka Police Capt. Michael Werges ran unopposed and was elected marshal, and he will replace retiring Chief Michael Wiegand. Eureka Board of Aldermen members Wes Sir (Ward 1), Carleen Murray (Ward 2) and Maria Ascrizzi (Ward 3) also ran unopposed and were reelected to the Board of Alderman.
