The Eureka Parks and Recreation Department has announced that it has changed the location of this year’s Easter egg hunt, which now will be held at Drewel Park on Hill Drive in the Shaws Garden subdivision.
The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 1.
Initially the city planned to hold the event at Legion Park but announced March 29 that the location was being changed because of renovations at the park, according to the department’s Facebook post.
The free event will feature photo opportunities with the Easter bunny and stations to decorate cookies and make crafts, as well as tree seedlings to take home, a pancake breakfast and, of course, egg hunts for children 12 and younger.
At the event, the parks department will accept donations of nonperishable food items to be donated to the Eureka Food Pantry housed at The River at Eureka Church, 219 N. Central Ave.
The hunts are divided by age groups, and there will be a total of 14,000 eggs for children to hunt, said Lizzie Roberds, Parks and Recreation supervisor of events and marketing.
The eggs will contain traditional Easter candy, and some will have small toys or stickers inside. For the youngest group, some eggs will contain bubbles, animal crackers and fruit snacks.
Roberds said the Easter bunny will signal when each age group may start collecting eggs because each start time is staggered, with the first hunt beginning at 11 a.m.
She said she is looking forward to the annual event.
“I love it,” she said. “It is our first outdoor event of the year. I think it is a super-fun kickoff to spring and the event season. It is a great time.”
