After the first few days for candidates to file for the April 4 election, several races already had shaped up.
In both Herculaneum and Hillsboro, there will be races for mayor, with Ryan Wright challenging William C. Haggard in Herculaneum and Douglas G. Browning challenging Buddy Russell in Hillsboro.
There also will be a race for the Arnold Ward 2 council seat and the Crystal City Council Ward 2 seat, as well as for a seat on the De Soto City Council.
At least five school districts will have races for seats on their boards of education – Crystal City, Jefferson R-7, Meramec Valley, Rockwood and Windsor C-1.
In addition, there is a race for a seat on the Jefferson College Board of Trustees, as well as for the Joachim-Plattin and Rock Township ambulance district boards.
Filings for the election opened Tuesday, 6, and will close Tuesday, Dec. 27.
All area school boards have three seats with three-year terms up for election; some have an additional seat for an unexpired term up for election.
Typically, candidates file to run for open seats during regular business hours at the offices of the various government entities, although some candidates are asked to file at the Jefferson County Administration Center in Hillsboro.
Those who are interested in filing are advised to check for possible holiday closures during the filing period, particularly for board of education races because school districts close for Christmas break.
The following is a list of candidates who had filed as of Monday, Dec. 12, at Leader deadline. Incumbents – those who were elected to their seats – are denoted with an (I).
Attempts were made to reach every city, school district and ambulance and fire district for a list of candidates who had filed in the Leader readership area for this story. Not every entity responded.
Sewer and water district elections also will take place during the April 4 election and filings for those races will be included at a later time.
