Lt. Dave Marshak, the commander of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Division, announced today (Sept. 19) that he plans to run for county sheriff in 2016.
Marshak said he will run as a Republican.
Jefferson County Sheriff Oliver “Glenn” Boyer said earlier this month he will retire in December 2016 after 24 years as sheriff. He endorsed his second in command, Lt. Col. Steve Meinberg, 57, of Imperial, who is a Democrat.
In a press release, Marshak, 42, who lives in the Jefferson R-7 area, said he has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 19 years and in law enforcement for 22 years. As Special Operations commander, he oversees firearms, S.W.A.T., canine, traffic, criminal interdiction, DWI enforcement and community relations.
Marshak said in his statement that he has the skills and ability to lead the Sheriff’s Office into the future.
“The Sheriff’s Office has made significant strides over the years, but it’s my goal to propel the agency to the next level in service and communication,” he said. “As a huge proponent of technology, I would allow all deputies to have access to the Internet, email, and online databases for investigations and training. Developing our technology base will save taxpayer money, and provide for a better-educated agency.”
Marshak said he would work to improve communication between the public and the office.
“Jefferson County deserves the most-qualified and best-trained officers who can build solid cases, reduce crime, and get justice for victims,” he said. “As we know, the Sheriff’s Office has always struggled with funding, so it’s my responsibility to make the tough decisions with the budget that is available. Overall, I would build the most cost-effective and efficient agency.”
Marshak is an adjunct professor at Jefferson College, teaches law enforcement classes to local, state, and federal officers, and is an NRA firearms instructor.
He said he earned an undergraduate degree in human resources management at Lindenwood University and a master's in communications with an emphasis in training and development through Lindenwood and St. Louis University.
