The Crystal City Council has a new member – Mike Osher, who has been appointed to replace Ward 4 Councilman Jered Farmer, who resigned from the seat in February.

Crystal City Council members voted unanimously March 22 to appoint Osher to fill the empty seat.

Mayor Tom Schilly said he recruited Osher because of his previous participation on city boards.

“I truly think Mike Osher will do a great job on the City Council,” Schilly said. “I feel he will be a good fit.”

Schilly said that after no one applied to fill the open seat, he asked Osher to consider serving on the council.

“I gave it a little bit of time,” he said. “Nobody came forward. I approached him. Good people are hard to find.”

Osher, 40, teaches health and industrial technology at Crystal City High School and is head coach of the Hornet boys and girls varsity tennis teams.

“I just wanted to get involved in the community,” Osher said.

“The mayor called about it, and I accepted.”

Osher said he will serve out the final year of Farmer’s unexpired two-year term and will decide later if he will run for the seat when it’s up for election in April 2022.

“I believe I’ll wait and see what it’s like,” Osher said. “We’ll go from there, basically.”

His wife, Mandie Osher, is a member of the Crystal City Board of Education. The two have a son, Michael.

Farmer said he resigned from the council for “personal reasons.”
