A multitude of road improvements are in store for Crystal City.
The Crystal City Council voted 7-0 June 28 to award a $209,096.82 contract to Dura-Seal Paving Contractor in Barnhart to repave numerous side streets in the city.
Dura-Seal, which has done work for the city before, submitted the lowest of six bids for the work, Mayor Tom Schilly said.
Streets to be repaved include Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth streets, as well as Virginia and Lindsay avenues, City Administrator Jason Eisenbeis said.
Schilly said the contract allows some lenience to add other streets if the funding is available.
“When the bids came in, they were a little bit lower than what we anticipated, so we tried to put it in the ordinance that as long as it doesn’t go over the initial projected bids, there’s some other small streets or alleys that we could also pave,” he said.
Eisenbeis said the work tentatively is set to begin on Aug. 16 and is expected to be completed approximately two weeks after that.
He said the project is part of regular annual road maintenance, and the expenses for the work are covered by the city’s budget.
“This is not an STP (Surface Transportation Program) project, so there is no federal grant money being used for this project,” he said. “One hundred percent of this project is being funded from our local road tax fund.”
Schilly said the project is part of the city’s effort to establish programs for regular upkeep of streets and other infrastructure.
Ward 3 Councilwoman Taylor Massa and Eisenbeis were absent from the meeting.
