The Jefferson County Council agreed Tuesday evening (Oct. 20) to appoint Derrick Good, Robert Kruse and Lisa Treat to the Hillsboro R-3 Board of Education.

County Executive Ken Waller’s nominated the three to fill seats on the school board that were vacated last month when school board president John Stewart and members Charles “Bo” Harrison and Dan McCarthy resigned.

Now that the County Council has confirmed Waller’s nominees, Good, Kruse and Treat are expected to be sworn in at the next school board meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 22) at the Hillsboro Learning Center, 10486 Business 21.

All three new board members have children enrolled in R-3 schools.

Good, 41, is an attorney; Kruse, 41, and his wife, Stacy, own The Hearth & Home Store in De Soto; and Treat, 44, works in the purchasing department at St. Louis Metropolitan Sewer District.

Twenty-three people applied to fill the vacant school board seats and Waller, with help from his staff, narrowed them to his three nominees.

“I want to thank (director of administration David) Courtway and (county counselor Wes) Yates for helping me in this process,” Waller said.

Waller also said he knows his decision disappointed all but three of the applicants, but he stressed that the three seats will be up for election in April 2016.

“We made our choices just by going through the questionnaires,” he said. “(The appointments) are for six months, before the next election. I feel, Dr. Cornman, I’m giving you good people to fill the positions until next April.”

The County Council held a separate vote to appoint each of the three school board members, and all the votes were 6-0. Councilman Jim Terry (Dist. 7, House Springs) was absent.
