The city of Wildwood will temporarily close its Community Park, 17155 Pond Grover Parkway, on Tuesday, July 29, so tree removal work can be completed there. Buddy’s Place Dog Park, located within the park, will be closed as well, city officials said.

Wildwood Communications and Economic Development manager Paula Vasan said the closure is to allow for the removal of 11 dead or declining trees throughout the park.

“The decision was based on our city arborist’s (Michael Walsh’s) review, which noted a mix of factors, including at least one case of emerald ash borer,” she said.

The ash borer is an invasive, wood-boring beetle that is killing ash trees across North America.

“(The trees to be removed) include a mix of dead, declining, or hazardous trees across various parts of the park, including near walking trails, the dog park and the playground area,” Vasan said. “While not all trees are tied to a specific disease, their removal is necessary for public safety and long-term park health.”

She said the city plans to replant trees in the affected areas.

“A replanting strategy is currently being developed to guide restoration using resilient, site-appropriate species,” she added.

While crews are working, city officials encourage residents to visit Wildwood’s other parks and trails.
