Students in three Fox C-6 School District buildings in Arnold were back in school today (Dec. 10) after a water main break gave them an unexpected day off from classes the day before, acting Superintendent Tim Crutchley said.

Crutchley said the water main break occurred overnight between Monday and Tuesday (Dec. 8-9) in the front of district property along Jeffco Boulevard where Fox High, Fox Middle and Fox Elementary schools are located.

“I made the decision to cancel school about 5 a.m.,” Crutchley said. “The buses did not go out.”

The cancellation affected about 1,800 students at the high school, 500 at the middle school and 600 at the elementary, he said.

Crutchley said the district’s maintenance staff repaired the water main.

“The water line is on our property, so it’s our water line,” Crutchley said. “It’s an old pipe.”

He said he did not have a cost estimate on the repairs.

Two other district buildings – the district administration office and Rickman Auditorium – also located on the property were not affected by the water main break, Crutchley reported.

“They’re on a different feed,” he said.

No other schools in the district were closed, a district spokeswoman said.

Crutchley said district officials have not yet determined when a make-up date for classes in the three buildings would occur.

He said he could not exactly recall the last time a water main break forced the cancellation of classes at a Fox C-6 school.

“In the last 10 years, I think that we’ve closed a school possibly once because of a water main break,” Crutchley said.
