The annual Missouri Back to School Sales Tax Holiday is set for this weekend.
During the holiday, which runs from 12:01 a.m. Friday (Aug. 6) to midnight Sunday (Aug. 8), the state will not collect its 4.225 percent sales tax on school-related purchases.
Counties, cities and other taxing entities have the option of participating in the state tax holiday, and Jefferson County will not charge its 1.625 percent sales tax either.
The cities of Arnold, Herculaneum, Hillsboro and Kimmswick also will take part in the holiday and refrain from collecting their local sales taxes during the weekend.
Arnold’s sales tax rate is 1.25 percent, Kimmswick’s is 1.5 percent, Hillsboro’s is 1.88 percent and Herculaneum’s is 2 percent.
However, even if an entity participates in the holiday, it may have a designated region not fully participating, like the Arnold Retail Corridor Transportation Development District.
The cities of Byrnes Mill, Crystal City, De Soto, Festus and Pevely will not participate in the sales tax holiday, so they still will collect their portion of sales taxes on purchases.
Items exempt from the sales tax this weekend include any article of clothing that costs $100 or less; school supplies up to $50 per purchase; computer software that costs $350 or less; personal computers that cost up to $1,500; and graphing calculators that cost up to $150.
