If you’re looking to save a little money on clothes and other supplies your children need before school starts this month, you might want to stock up this weekend.
The 2022 Missouri Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday began at 12:01 a.m. today, Aug. 5, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 7.
During the holiday, the state is not collecting its 4.225 percent sales tax on school-related purchases. Jefferson County also is not charging its 1.625 percent sales tax on those items.
The cities of Arnold, Herculaneum, Hillsboro and Kimmswick are participating in the holiday, too, and will not charge their sales taxes. Arnold’s sales tax rate is 1.25 percent, Kimmswick’s is 1.5 percent, Hillsboro’s is 1.88 percent and Herculaneum’s is 2 percent.
However, there could be some community improvement districts or other taxing entities within the county or participating cities that have opted out of participating and are still charging their sales taxes.
The cities of Byrnes Mill, Crystal City, De Soto, Festus and Pevely are not taking part in the sales tax holiday, so they are still collecting their sales taxes on all purchases.
In participating areas, sales tax will not be charged on any article of clothing that costs $100 or less; school supplies up to $50 per purchase; computer software that costs $350 or less; personal computers that cost up to $1,500; and graphing calculators that cost up to $150.
