Lonedell Road in Arnold will be closed to northbound traffic starting Monday

Lonedell Road will be closed to northbound traffic between White Dawn Court and Pomme Road starting on Monday, July 14, the city of Arnold announced Wednesday, July 9. The road will remain open to southbound traffic.

Judy Wagner, who works as a part-time project engineer for Arnold, said the partial closure will last for at least six months while the road is widened and new storm sewers, curbs and gutters are installed.

“We are hoping to be done in six months,” she said. “That is based on weather conditions this fall.”

The stretch of road being worked on is about 0.8 miles, Wagner said. She said northbound traffic will be directed to take Pomme Road to Old Lemay Ferry Road during the partial closure.

Arnold hired K.J. Unnerstall Construction Co. of Washington to complete the project.

In 2023, Arnold received a Surface Transportation Block Grant from the East-West Gateway Council of Governments to help pay for the Lonedell Road project.

Wagner said the grant will cover $1,306,216 of the cost, and Arnold will pay the remaining $978,784.

The project includes widening the lanes from 9 1/2 feet wide to 11 wide, resurfacing the roadway, putting in stormwater pipes and enclosing the open drainage ditches along the side of the road, installing curbing gutters with inlets to collect water to filter through the pipes to a nearby creek, building a 6-foot sidewalk on one of side of the road, doing work on sharp hills on the road to lessen blind spots and posting signs reminding drivers to share the road with bicyclists.

In a memo to the city, K.J. Unnerstall said crews are expected to work from 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. until the project is completed.
