The deadline for candidates to file for open seats on the April 6 ballot has passed, and numerous races have emerged, particularly for seats on school boards across the county.
The Fox C-6 School District, which has eight candidates vying for two open seats, drew the most interest. Other school districts with races for school board seats include Dunklin R-5, Festus R-6, Grandview R-2, Hillsboro R-3, Jefferson R-7, Northwest R-1, Rockwood, Sunrise R-9 and Windsor C-1.
Jefferson College will have a race, with six candidates competing for the two open seats on its board of directors.
The city of Kimmswick will have a mayoral race, and the city of Hillsboro will have a race for the Ward 4 seat, with former Mayor Dennis Bradley challenging incumbent Joyce Twiggs.
In addition, the city of Arnold will have a race for a Ward 3 seat; De Soto will have races for three-year and one-year terms; the city of Eureka will have a race for a Ward 2 seat; and the city of Festus will have races for seats in wards 1 and 2.
The April ballot also will have seats up for election on ambulance, fire, water, sewer and special road districts. Of those, only the Joachim-Plattin and Rock Township ambulance districts and the C-1 Public Water District will have races in April.
Some governing bodies have no seats up for election on the April ballot, like the Jefferson County 911 Dispatch and the Jefferson County Health Department boards.
In addition, not all fire districts have open seats on the ballot each year. This year Antonia, Cedar Hill, Dunklin, Goldman, Jefferson R-7 and Rock Community fire protection districts will have no elections.
A number of other entities do not have elections scheduled in April because they either do not need to hold an election at all or only for specific offices because the number of candidates who filed is the same as the number of seats up for election, or, in the case of water districts, may appoint people to fill positions if no candidates or not enough candidates filed to fill the open seats.
The following is a list of candidates from the Jefferson County and Eureka areas. Candidates who were elected to their offices the last time their term was up for election are denoted with an (I) for incumbent. Those who were appointed to their seats also is indicated.
The complete list of candidates and issues for the April 6 ballot is available on the Jefferson County Government website at jeffcomo.org.
