The filing period for those who plan to run for public office in the April 4, 2023, general election opens Tuesday, Dec. 6, and ends Tuesday, Dec. 27.
Candidates who file for the April election, will run for seats on boards that govern cities, school districts and fire, ambulance, water, sewer and road districts.
In countywide races, Jefferson College has two seats up for election, and the Jefferson County Health Department has three seats up for election. Jefferson County 911 Dispatch has no seats to put before voters in April.
Not all fire districts have open seats on the ballot each year, and in 2022 there will be no elections for the Antonia, Cedar Hill, Dunklin, Goldman, Hematite, Jefferson R-7 and Rock Community districts.
The last day for governmental entities to place tax increase requests and other measures on the ballot is Jan. 24. The last day to register to vote in the election is March 8.
Typically, candidates file for open seats during regular business hours at the offices that serve the various governmental entities, although some candidates are asked to file at the Jefferson County Administration Center in Hillsboro.
Those who are interested in filing are advised to check for possible holiday closures, especially at school districts, which close for winter breaks. School districts will be required to be open for at least part of the day on Dec. 27, the last day of filings, so those wishing to file for seats on boards of education are advised to check their hours.
The following is a list of local office holders whose terms expire in April. Incumbents – those who were elected to the seats they hold – are denoted with an (I). Those who were appointed to fill vacancies on boards are noted, as well as the names of those they replaced, when the information was available.
