Two people were killed and three young children were seriously hurt in a two-vehicle collision Saturday evening (May 15) on Hwy. A east of Pioneer Road east of Hillsboro.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that Karen S. Crouse, 49, of Hillsboro was driving a 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander west on the highway and crossed the center line, and Andrew Sanchez, 28, of Bloomsdale, who was driving an eastbound 2010 Ford Escape, crossed over the center line to avoid the other vehicle, but they struck head-on, the report said.

Sanchez and Crouse were each pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics with the Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District, the report said.

Two children in the Ford, a girl, 2, and a boy, 1, both of Bloomsdale, sustained serious injuries and both were taken by Valle Ambulance to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, the report said.

A 7-year-old Hillsboro girl in the Mitsubishi also suffered serious injuries and she was taken by Arch One helicopter to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, the report said.

Updates on their conditions were not available.

Crouse was wearing a seat belt but Sanchez was not, the report said. The report indicated that officers did not know if the children were in safety seats or were wearing seat belts.

Both vehicles were totaled, the report said.
