A Ste. Genevieve woman and man died, and an Arnold man was hurt Monday afternoon (Nov. 23) in a five-vehicle accident on I-55 north of Hwy. Z in the Pevely area, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.
At 1:30 p.m., James A. Milstead, 58, of Bowling Green was driving a 1993 Western Star big rig north on the interstate, approaching a northbound 2015 Chevrolet Cruze ahead that Jacob D. Stevenson, 23, of Arnold was driving below the minimum speed limit, and the big rig struck the rear of the car, which then ran off the right side of the road and overturned, the report said.
After that collision, the big rig struck the right side of a northbound 2013 Acura TL driven by Deanna L. Vander, 40, of Festus, and then the big rig traveled through the cable barrier and struck the left front of a southbound 2020 Kia Telluride driven by Rebecca J. Byrd, 66, of Ste. Genevieve, according to the report.
The impact from that collision caused the cable barrier to strike the left side of a southbound 2019 Nissan Altima driven by John D. Crawford, 54, of Cooter, the report said.
No injuries were reported for Milstead, Vander or Crawford.
However, Stevenson was moderately injured and taken by Joachim-Plattin Ambulance to Mercy Hospital South in south St. Louis County, where he was treated and released, a hospital spokesman said.
Byrd and a passenger in the Kia – Leonard W. Byrd, 72, of Ste. Genevieve – were pronounced dead at the scene by Joachim-Plattin Ambulance personnel, the report said.
Leonard Byrd was not wearing a seat belt, but all the drivers were wearing them, the patrol reported.
The Cruze and the Kia were totaled, the big rig and the Acura were moderately damaged, and the Altima had minor damage, the report said.
