Shawn E. Stout, 44, of Arnold was injured Wednesday afternoon, July 5, when he was struck while working in a construction zone on I-70 west of Jennings Station Road in St. Louis County, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.
At 12:15 p.m., Stout was working in the road behind a 2018 Ford F450 truck that was stopped in the active, signed work zone. The truck was towing a unit with an active electric arrow designed to warn motorists about the lane closure, the report said.
However, Charles L. Spencer, 54, of Potwin, Kan., who was driving an eastbound 2017 Subaru Outback, reportedly failed to yield to the work zone signs, and the front right side of the Outback struck the right rear of the towed unit with the arrow sign. That collision pushed forward the towed unit, which struck Stout, who had attempted to avoid the impact. Then, the front of the Outback struck the rear of the truck, according to the report.
No injuries were reported for Spencer, but Stout was moderately injured and taken by ambulance to SSM Health DePaul Hospital St. Louis in Bridgeton.
Spencer was wearing a seat belt, the patrol reported.
The Outback was extensively damaged, and the truck was moderately damaged, the report said.
