fatal accident with road lines in background

Savannah McCreary, 28, of De Soto died Sunday afternoon, April 30, from injuries she sustained in a one-vehicle accident early that morning on I-55 in Festus. She was the wife of Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Colby McCreary, who was driving when the accident occurred, Festus Police reported.

The accident happened at about 1:05 a.m. on southbound I-55 at the 177 mile marker, Festus Chief Doug Wendel reported.

“(Colby McCreary) was driving a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. It ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a bluff and overturned,” Wendel said. “Witnesses said he drifted off the right side of the road and struck the rock bluff.”

Both Colby and Savannah McCreary were ejected from the Jeep and were taken by Joachim-Plattin Ambulance to Mercy Hospital South in south St. Louis County with serious injuries, Wendel said.

Colby McCreary, the son of De Soto Police Chief Jeff McCreary, was listed in satisfactory condition this morning, May 1, a hospital spokesman said.

Wendel said neither Savannah nor Colby McCreary was wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred.

“There were no signs of impairment,” Wendel added.

Sheriff Dave Marshak issued the following statement about the accident.

“The impact of this incident on our department is yet to be understood, but the love for the McCreary family within our organization and the law enforcement community is profound,” he said. “We will do our best to support the entire family and our employees who have been impacted by this tragedy.”
