A 52-year-old Pacific man died after crashing into an abandoned school bus at the intersection of I-44 and Six Flags Road in Eureka early Saturday morning, Sept. 16. Daniel Duncan was traveling westbound on I-44 in a 2019 Chevrolet Express van when he struck a driverless bus that had rolled into traffic, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report.
“It was an abandoned bus on the side of the road,” said William Stamberger, Eureka Fire Protection District public information officer. “There was no driver around. It appears to have popped out of gear and proceeded into traffic.”
Duncan was pronounced dead on the scene by Eureka Fire Protection District at 1:10 a.m.
The owner of the 2014 bus is unknown. Stamberger said it was not a full-sized school bus.
“I don’t believe it had any school district attributed to it,” he said. “It may have been repurposed for some other type of transportation.”
