A man driving a dump truck that was struck by a train in Eureka was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries, Eureka Fire Protection District Chief Scott Barthelmass said.
No other injuries were reported.
Eureka Fire was called at about 4:20 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, to West Main Street after a train collided with the truck. Firefighters were initially told the train derailed after the accident, but it remained on the track, Barthelmass said.
The dump truck overturned near the railroad tracks.
He said the train, which had two engines and 52 cars, was traveling west when it struck the dump truck. The dump truck driver was driving on a private road and attempted to cross a section of track that had no signals or gates.
“The driver made the comment at the scene that he did not see the train,” Barthelmass said.
Eureka Fire posted pictures on Facebook of the accident that showed the heavily damaged truck and damage to the front of the train engine car.
Barthelmass said Eureka Fire cleared the scene in about an hour. He also said the road was closed for a few hours to allow the dump truck to be towed.
Barthelmass said the train was functioning after the accident, but he did not know if a new engine car was needed to move the train due to the damage the other engine car sustained.
He said no other train track crossings were affected by the accident.
