traffic accident with patrol patch

A 19-year-old Imperial woman was injured on Tuesday, Sept. 3, in a crash on I-55 at Meramec Bottom Road in south St. Louis County, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.

At 12:05 p.m., Ariyah L. Velleroy-Smith was driving in a northbound 2012 Acura TL when she struck the rear of a northbound 2013 Chevrolet Cruze that was stalled in the road, the report said. The Chevrolet, which was being driven by Kathryn S. Barker, 74, of Ironton, was pushed into the median wall and caught fire.

Barker was seriously injured and Velleroy-Smith was moderately injured, the report said. Barker was taken by Mehlville Fire Protection District, and Velleroy-Smith was taken by Rock Township Ambulance to Mercy Hospital South in south St. Louis County.

According to a hospital spokesman, as of this evening, Sept. 4, Barker was in serious condition at Mercy Hospital St. Louis in Creve Coeur.

Both Barker and Velleroy-Smith were wearing seat belts, and both vehicles were totaled, the report said.
