John Summers, 74, of Imperial died last week following a single-vehicle accident on Vogel Road near Elmer Drive in Arnold. He apparently suffered a medical emergency and lost consciousness before a pickup he was driving ran off the road and hit a concrete light pole, Arnold Police reported.
Officers responded to the accident at about 10:55 a.m. April 12. They found Summers unconscious in the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado that had run off the road. Summers was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital South in south St. Louis County, where he was pronounced dead at 12:07 p.m. by hospital staff, the report said.
A witness told police he saw Summers driving north on Vogel Road in the Silverado, and it appeared Summers lost consciousness just south of Elmer Drive when the pickup went off the right side of the road but then returned to the road before running off the right side of the road again just north of Elmer Drive, crossing a grassy area and hitting the pole, the report said.
The Silverado was totaled, according to the report.
