Two men, one from House Springs and the other from Washington, Mo., were hurt Sunday evening (Jan. 3) in a wrong-way accident on I-44 at mile marker 242 in Franklin County, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reports.

At 7:13 p.m., Harold J. Sims, 96, of Washington was driving a 1999 Toyota Corolla in the wrong direction on eastbound I-44, and as he was headed west on the interstate, he drove into the path of an eastbound 2010 Hyundai driven by Paul J. Cauwenbergh, 55, of House Springs, the patrol reported.

The front left of the Corolla struck the front left of the other car, the report said.

Sims was seriously hurt and Cauwenbergh sustained minor injuries, the report said.

Both men were taken by ambulance to area hospitals – Sims to SSM Health Center in Fenton and Cauwenbergh to Mercy Hospital St. Louis in Creve Coeur, according to the report.

Sims was not wearing a seat belt, and Cauwenbergh was wearing one, the patrol reported.

Both cars were extensively damaged, the report said.
