Tractor-trailer gets stuck under railroad trestle in Festus

Traffic was stopped for more than an hour after a tractor-trailer became stuck under a Festus train trestle.

Motorists had to take alternate routes after a tractor-trailer became stuck under a Festus train trestle for more than an hour this afternoon, June 9.

According to Festus Police at the scene of the accident on Horine Road under the Burlington Northern Santa Fe trestle, the tractor-trailer got stuck about 2:30 p.m. The truck was extricated in about an hour, but the intersection remained blocked.

Festus Fire Chief Jeff Broombaugh said the intersection near North Fifth Street reopened at about 4 p.m.

The bridge clearance is 11 feet 4 inches. The tractor-trailer, which had “Logistics LLC” painted on the side, sustained damage to its top as did the trailer it pulled.

A train stopped on the west side of the trestle had to stay in place until authorities allowed it to proceed at about 4:40 p.m., a witness said.

A railroad employee at the scene said he did not believe the trestle was damaged.
