A De Soto woman and man died and two others were injured Friday, June 10, in a two-vehicle accident at Hwy. 67 and Papin Road north of Valles Mines in Jefferson County, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.
At 9:55 a.m., Dellene L. Spegal, 71, of De Soto was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Impala east on Papin Road and while trying to cross Hwy. 67, she reportedly failed to yield to a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica headed north on the highway and driven by Louis F. Strecker IV, 55, of St. Charles. Strecker reportedly tried to stop, but the front of the Pacific struck the right side of the Impala. Then, both vehicles ran off the right side of the road and overturned, the report said.
Spegal and a passenger in the Impala – Jimmie D. Spegal, 85, of De Soto – were pronounced dead at the scene by Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District personnel. Another passenger in the Impala – Marsha E. Bennett, 70, of De Soto – was seriously injured and taken by helicopter to Mercy Hospital St. Louis in Creve Coeur, the report said.
Strecker was moderately injured and taken by Joachim-Plattin Ambulance to Mercy Hospital South in south St. Louis County, according to the report.
Dellene Spegal was not wearing a seat belt, and Strecker and the injured passengers were wearing them, the patrol reported.
The two vehicles were totaled, the report said.
