traffic accident 3

A Crystal City man was seriously injured Monday night (Nov. 2) when he was standing outside a stalled car on I-55 and was struck by another vehicle. Three St. Louis residents also were hurt in the three-vehicle accident, which happened at 10:40 p.m. on the interstate south of Union Road in St. Louis County, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.

Rachelle C. Abt, 22, of St. Louis was driving a 2010 Nissan Rogue north on the interstate and struck the rear of a northbound 2016 Nissan Altima that was stopped behind a northbound 2008 Scion TC that was stalled in one of the lanes, the report said.

After that collision, the front of the Altima struck Thomas M. Flowers, 58, of Crystal City, who was standing outside the stalled Scion. The front of the Altima also struck the rear of the Scion, which then spun and was struck by the Rogue, according to the report.

Harrison L. Moen, 24, of St. Louis was driving the Altima, and it’s unknown who had been driving the Scion, the report said.

Flowers was seriously injured and taken by ambulance to SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition this afternoon (Nov. 4), a hospital spokeswoman said.

Abt was moderately injured and taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital South in south St. Louis County, where she was treated and released, a hospital spokesman said.

Moen and a passenger in the Altima – Hannah E. Moen, 27, of St. Louis – had minor injuries and were taken by private conveyance to Mercy South, where they, too, were treated and released.

Abt and both the Moens were wearing seat belts, and since Flowers was standing outside a vehicle, he was exempt from using a safety device, the patrol reported.

The three vehicles were totaled, the report said.
