A vehicle accident early Tuesday morning, Feb. 3, on southbound I-55 in Herculaneum forced the complete closure of the highway for a couple hours and affected traffic for several more hours, the Herculaneum Police reported.
In a written statement from Police Chief Sharia Kyle, she said the department received a call at 2:42 a.m. about a single-vehicle accident on southbound I-55 north of McNutt Street and south of the Joachim Bridge. She said the accident involved a rental box truck carrying Amazon packages and its diesel fuel spilled.
“Hazmat was called for clean up,” Kyle said.
She said southbound I-55 was shut down until about 7:30 a.m.
She said northbound I-55 was shut down for two hours, then intermittently closed “to clear traffic and reroute traffic at (Hwy. Z).”
“Multiple agencies responded to assist, including Jeffco Hazmat,” Kyle said.
