A 15-year-old Barnhart girl died Sunday morning (Jan. 17) when she was riding in a car that crashed on I-55/70 in East St. Louis, the Illinois State Police reported.
Three teenage boys and two other teenage girls also were in the car, a 2015 Infiniti Q40. All five of them were seriously injured and taken to an area hospital, the report said.
Authorities have not released the name of the teenage girl who died in the accident.
At 12:55 a.m., Kevin Zamacona, 18, of St. Louis was driving the Infiniti east on the interstate when he lost control of the car near mile marker 1.6 and the car went through a guardrail on the left shoulder, overturned and rolled into the westbound lanes. The Barnhart teen was ejected from the car and died at the scene, police reported.
In addition to Zamacona, Cameron K. Sherzai, 19, and Joseph R. Alwaeli, 18, both of St. Louis, and two 15-year-old girls from St. Louis were injured in the crash, according to the report.
The report does not indicate if the driver or any of the passengers were wearing seat belts.
The Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation and the Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit are investigating the accident, the report said.
