A Barnhart man and a St. Louis man were hurt Sunday afternoon (June 4) in a two-car accident on I-55 south of Imperial Main Street, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reports.
At 12:21 p.m., Darrell L. Bennett of St. Louis was headed north on I-55 in a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier and struck the rear of another northbound car, a 2009 Honda Civic driven by Colette L. Smith, 73, of Barnhart, the report said.
After the collision, the Cavalier ran off the right side of the interstate and up an embankment, where the car’s undercarriage struck the ground before the car overturned, according to the report.
The top of the Cavalier struck a bridge at Imperial Main and Bennett was ejected, the report said.
The patrol did not list an age for Bennett, who was seriously hurt and taken by Rock Township Ambulance to SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital. No information about his condition was available today (June 6).
No injuries were reported for Colette Smith, but a passenger in the Civic – William M. Smith, 87, of Barnhart – sustained minor injuries, although he refused treatment at the scene, according to the report.
Both the Smiths were wearing seat belts, but Bennett was not, the patrol reported.
The Cavalier was totaled, and the Civic sustained minor damage, the report said.
