
Nancy Nicholson Wood, 78, of the De Soto area earned first place with a 1910 photo of her grandmother, Hallie Yount, then 16, and her great-aunt, Blanche Yount, then 14.

Barbara Rose, 73, of De Soto took home second place with a picture of her family in Sacramento, Calif., on Easter 1954.

Dawn Tucker, 58, of Hillsboro won third place with a photo taken in 1902 of her grandmother, the late Marie Kahsner, with Tucker’s paternal great-grandmother and great-grandfather.

Dawn Tucker, 58, of Hillsboro sent this picture taken in the early 1940s at Mechanics Motor off South Broadway in St. Louis. In the front row, in the center, is Dawn’s maternal grandfather. “His name was William Arban,” Dawn said. “Everyone called him Buck, but I called him Pokey.” Standing, second from the right, is her great-uncle, Albert Viehland, who was the brother of William’s wife, Edna Viehland. “Pokey would take me to the park and out to lunch, or wherever I wanted to go. This picture was taken way before I was born, but my grandpa looks so happy here, and I bet he loved working with his brother in-law.”

Tricia Roland, 62, of Crystal City sent a picture taken in the mid ’40s of her parents, in the center, Charles Woods of Festus and Shirley Graham of Crystal City, while they were dating. “Could be right after my dad returned from World War II,” Tricia said.

Cindy Foster, 66, of Arnold sent a picture of her mother, Mary Psaris, then 22, in this picture taken in 1950 by Cindy’s father, Dennis. “She and Dad recently had married, and he was determined to teach her to hunt,” Cindy said. The pair hunted in Ballwin.

Mike Cooper, 64, of De Soto sent a picture taken around 1935 in Jedburgh of Mike’s grandparents, Clyde and Iola Cooper, and his father, Jack Cooper. “I like this photo because it shows the happy and more carefree days,” Mike said. “Something that seems to be missing in our lives today.”

Beverly (Martin) Dougherty, 74, of Herculaneum sent a picture of her great-aunt, Anna (Martin) Bornmueller, who lived from 1885-1971. Anna is 16 in this professional photo taken in 1901 in St. Louis by Hilmar Bornmueller, who would marry her five years later in San Francisco. The pair was married just two weeks before the Great San Francisco Earthquake in April.

Beverly (Martin) Dougherty, 74, of Herculaneum sent a picture of Virginia Bornmueller, who is the daughter of Beverly’s great-aunt and great-uncle, meeting Charles Lindbergh. “Virginia's father, Hilmar Bornmueller, was a professional photographer for the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper, so it is likely that he took his daughter with him to a photo shoot with Lindbergh at a San Francisco airport,” Beverly said. “Judging by Virginia’s age, I am guessing the photo was taken in the 1920s, probably after Lindbergh made his transatlantic flight in May 1927.”

Star Ehrenreich, 59, of Arnold sent a picture from 1946 of her great-grandparents, William Elmer Thomas (Dec. 28, 1899, to Oct. 20, 1966) and Cecil Geraldine Thomas (March 13, 1900, to Jan. 4, 1994), and their children. “My great-grandparents met in the 1920s while working in a toilet paper factory,” Star said. “He cut the rolls, and she boxed them.” Their daughters were, from left, Wilma Lee Thomas (Jan. 19, 1941, to Nov. 19, 2019), Shirley Colleen Thomas (Aug. 20, 1927, to Aug. 10, 1971), Doris Maxine Thomas (March 16, 1925, to April 15, 2012) and Karen Geraldine Thomas (March 23, 1938, to July 27, 1956). Shirley was Star’s grandmother. “I love old photos and find it sad when I see old photos and no one knows who the people are. Although my children are grown, I will be passing this down after I have it framed, as I want them to see where they come from and the past.” Star said Karen died young at 18 after being bit by a mosquito while traveling in California and catching a disease. Karen was seven months pregnant at the time, and her son survived. He was named Gerald Dean after her middle name, Geraldine.

Barb Rohm, 68, of Hillsboro sent a picture from 1944 during World War II of her father, Raymond Davidson, who was from St. Louis. This photo was taken in New Haven in Edinburgh, Scotland, and is where Raymond met Barb’s mother, Robina Wilson.

Dana (Moore) Brooks, 56, of Arnold sent a picture taken in July 1975 by her mother, Delores Moore, at Rocky Mountain National Park. Pictured, from left, are Dana, Sheila (Moore) Vlaich, Jay Moore and Jackie (Moore) Holdinghausen. “We always took a two-week family vacation each summer,” Dana said. “My mother passed in 1991, and she was the one always creating these family photos.” Dana’s father, Jay, turned 90 in March.

Bettye Gayle Ruble-Juergens of Dittmer was 9 in this photo taken in October 1975 in Cedar Hill. “I got to pick a puppy (when I was) 4 years and 9 months old, and I chose him,” Bettye said. “He pranced his paws, so I named him Pranci Paws.” This picture was taken by her late mother, Betty Jo (Bennett) Ruble, who was a watercolor and oil painter.

Bettye Gayle Ruble-Juergens of Dittmer was 2 in this photo taken in July 1968. Also pictured are Roger Lee Ruble, Vernita Jo Ruble-Cogo, Sheryl Lynne Ruble and Bennett Lee Ruble. Their parents, Betty Jo (Bennett) Ruble and Vernon Guy Ruble had bought a wagon. “My parents and four siblings moved from Maplewood, shortly after I was born, to Cedar Hill,” Bettye said. “We lived at the former Cedric Farm Lodge.” This picture was taken by her late mother, who was a watercolor and oil painter.

Annette Hughes, 68, of Festus sent a picture taken around 1937 of her mother, Millie (Jokerst) McClanahan, and her brother, Ray. “They were the youngest two of seven children,” Annette said. “It just always amazed me how my grandparents raised seven kids in such a small house, and this was before an addition was put on the back. I have to laugh when I see my mom holding a chicken. She was never very fond of the pets we had growing up.” The photo was taken at the family’s house in Crystal City. “Their brother, Charles ‘Sam’ Jokerst lived in the home until his passing in 2012.”

Rosemary Graham, 78, of Hillsboro sent a picture of herself and her husband, George Graham, in Graceland in June 1996. “George and I were suffering from ‘empty nest,’ so we decided to just take a weekend trip down (Hwy.) 67,” Rosemary said. “We stopped in Ste. Genevieve to tour the old town, then proceeded to St. Mary’s Antique Mall. We stopped for dinner and checked into a motel for the night. Early Sunday morning, we continued our journey and ended up at Graceland. After Graceland, we decided to head back home. There’s no place like home!”

Ilene Shepard Smiddy, 92, of De Soto sent a picture taken in June 1933 in Salem by her father, A.C. Shepard, of herself, then 4 months, and her uncle James Shepard (May 28, 1911, to April 1, 1941). “Uncle James adored me,” Ilene said. “He was killed in an auto accident when I was 8 years old. It was my first experience with death. I have never forgotten.”

Carolyn Bottila, 65, of De Soto can be seen on the right in this picture taken in 1966 at the Franz A. Hermann-John Oheim House in Kimmswick. She was with her sister, Linda Thompson, and their father, Walter L. Eschbach. “At the time, he was researching the house for his book, ‘Historic Sites of Jefferson County,’” Carolyn said. “I remember it had two basements.”

Ken Holdinghausen, 66, of Festus sent a picture taken by Warren Holdinghausen in May 1967 in Herculaneum of Ken at age 8. “My father let me drive the new 1966 Wheel Horse tractor, and I learned to mow and never forgot it,” Ken said. “I still love mowing and tractors! Also, there’s a 1954 Ford pickup in background.”
