Jim Leonard, 62, of Eureka sent a picture taken in July of his wife, Becky Leonard, 64, next to the sunflower she planted in the spring. “Every year, she plants many vegetables and plants from seeds,” Jim said. “She starts them in early spring inside our house so they don’t get a chance of frost – then, later in the spring, she transfers them outside. I love this photo of her looking proudly at her seven-foot sunflower.”

Patricia Dennis, 65, of Robertsville said she and her husband, Mark Dennis Sr., created this home garden together. “I want to walk through and pick flowers, so my husband will never need to buy me flowers again,” Patricia said. “It’s our little piece of paradise.”

The garden is full of balsam, which her grandma had around the house as she was growing up. “Bees loved it! As a kid I was unsettled about being around them. As an adult I've grown to appreciate those bees! Peeking through the balsam is Amaryllis belladonna, a.k.a. ‘naked ladies’ according to my Grandma Robertson.” Jody said her love for plants comes from her late mother and grandmothers. “As I water them in the morning I reminisce and think of them. I love growing plants that they loved.”

Kenny and Jane AuBuchon, 63, of Festus sent a picture Jane took earlier this month of a tree they’ve had for over 25 years. “When our daughter, Alicia AuBuchon, was in fourth grade during the 1998-99 school year at Festus, she was given a bald cypress seedling,” Jane said. “We planted it, and it has been growing strong ever since.”

Here you see the shasta daisies behind it.”

Although we love gardening, this is a great way to have flowers even if you don’t have a green thumb.”
