Three flu-related deaths and four COVID-related deaths have been reported in Jefferson County so far this respiratory season, which began Sept. 28. The latest flu death was reported the week of Feb. 1, and the latest COVID death was reported the week of Feb. 8, according to the respiratory season reports released Tuesday by the Jefferson County Health Department.
The Health Department reported 37 cases of COVID during the week of Feb. 8, down from 84 the week prior. Since the respiratory season began, there have been 1,624 COVID cases reported in the county.
A total of 328 flu cases, 136 type A and 192 type B, were reported the week of Feb. 8, up from a total of 274 the week prior. Since the respiratory season began, there have been 2,731 reported cases.
The season ends May 16.
During the 2024-2025 respiratory season, 4,117 flu cases and 3,242 COVID cases were reported to the Health Department. The season peaked at 733 flu cases during the week of Feb. 2 and COVID cases peaked the week of Dec. 22 at 233. Fourteen flu-related deaths and 20 COVID-related deaths were reported last year.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone 6 months and older get an annual influenza (flu) vaccine, especially those at higher risk. The CDC recommends an updated COVID vaccine for most adults.
