Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 19 may have just started — two episodes dropped on premiere day on May 28 — on Paramount+, but that doesn’t mean we can’t look ahead. After all, filming on Season 20 is already underway, after the renewal came early, in March. Each finale, the show’s writers do a great job of setting up the following season, and TV Insider got scoop from showrunner Erica Messer about what to expect this year.
“The biggest thing is that [the Season 19 finale] lets us know some chapters are ending, but our fight against good versus evil in this world is never ending. And so we end this season with that idea that yeah, this big case might be behind you, but there’s another one that’s just brewing and it’s really bad and all hands on deck,” she tells us while discussing the first two episodes of the season.
She continues, “And so we want to believe that between Seasons 19 and 20, they solved the case that was introduced to them at the end of Season 19 because it’s been a year. Once again, it’ll be a year between seasons story-wise, between 19 and 20.”
Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 19 jumped forward a year with its premiere, which sees serial killer Elias Voit (Zach Gilford) still locked up but now household name, thanks to podcasts all about him. The BAU will also be dealing with a Sicarius copycat, The Fan, described as “their most formidable nemesis yet” and “precise, calculating, and relentlessly dangerous.” This UnSub is going to “push the BAU to the brink and back under the shadow of Elias Voit,” with the season description asking, “How far will The Fan go to prove his superiority over his idol?”
We’ve gotten glimpses of The Fan in the first two episodes of the season, but, Messer reveals, “We won’t meet him face-to-face until Episode 8. So it’s really Episode 8, 9, 10. We’re aware of him, which is why we’re talking to Voit a lot, but the audience won’t see who it is until Episode 8.”
