Dog parks

Herculaneum officials will try for the third time to cut the ribbon to dedicate All Bark Village, its new dog park.

The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at the park located in Herculaneum City Park, 850 Joachim Ave.

The ceremony had been scheduled for Saturday, May 11, but was been postponed due to high water levels of the nearby Joachim Creek and the resulting muddy ground. It was rescheduled for June 8, but when the Joachim again rose, the dedication was canceled.

Jerry Stoverink of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Crystal City will bless the gathering, Haggard said.

He said a photographer will be on hand to take pictures of attendees and their pets. Refreshments will be provided and attendance prizes will be awarded, he said.

Admission is free, but $5 donations will be accepted for photographs.

The dog park is roughly an acre in size and is fenced in. It includes a section for small dogs and a separate area for large dogs.

The city agreed in July 2012 to develop it. The price tag is expected to come in under $45,000, Haggard said. The project is being financed with city money and through private donations and sponsorships.

Haggard said city officials put up roughly $20,000 to kick-start the project. The money, which came out of the city's parks fund, paid for the fencing and concrete walkways, he said.

He said donations are still being accepted and sponsorships are available. The list of needed items includes shade trees and shade structures, benches, agility equipment and drinking fountains. Sponsorships start at $25 and up to $10,000.
