Mudd 6

George R. Mudd Sr.

Betty Mudd of Arnold sent in a photo of her husband, George R. Mudd Sr., who served with the Navy during World War II. “He joined the service on July 6, 1943,” she says. “His ship, the destroyer S.S. Coghlan, was the first ship to sail around Japan after the H bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. It was there to pick up downed pilots who ran out of fuel and had to ditch in the ocean.”

Seaman First Class Mudd received the American Area Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged June 26, 1946.
