Honoring ‘one of our own’

Christy Gay submitted these photos honoring her good friend and co-worker, the late Russel McKenzie.

“Russ worked at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery for 12 years,” Gay said. “His hard and dedicated work allowed him to climb through the ranks as a caretaker, equipment operator, work leader, and recently be promoted to grounds foreman.”

Cpl. McKenzie grew up in Crystal City and graduated from Grandview High School. He and his wife, Lynn McKenzie, lived and raised their four children in Festus. He joined the Marine Corps in 1997 and was honorably discharged in 2001. After his death in April at age 44, he was laid to rest in the National Cemetery where he had worked.

“Everyone who works at the National Cemetery is a veteran,” Gay said. “What we do every day is honoring those who have served. When it comes to honoring one of your own, it is more than a challenge, it hurts and he is greatly missed.”
