A humorous meme made the rounds of Facebook in the early days of the pandemic that pictured a marching band with the caption "Band directors could solve COVID. They know about distancing and keeping hands off your face." This summer, in high school marching band camps around the county, band directors get their shot. Festus High's Marching Tigers concluded their two-week camp Thursday (Aug. 6) and it featured optional face masks when not playing instruments -- many students donned theirs for much of the day -- compact practices divided by instrument type (woodwinds, brass, percussion) with the Color Guard in its own place -- and separation, both in the band room and outside on the practice field. During the camp, the Marching Tigers worked on both their on-field footwork as well as their halftime show, a salute to the music of Motown Records.
