Anyone who has raised boys knows most of them have a few things in common. They love to play with cars and trucks, they love dogs, or at least reading about them if they don’t have one of their own, and they love to eat chocolate chip cookies. Even most not-so-young boys are interested in all three things.
Chocolate chips cookies have been around as long as I can remember, and if you’re like me, they were the first kind of cookie you learned how to make. They’re quick to mix and easy to bake, and as long as you follow the directions, they always turn out great. Originally called “Toll House Cookies,” nearly every recipe for chocolate chip cookies is exactly the same.
However, I found a recipe in 1971 on a package of Philadelphia Cream Cheese called “Philly Chippers” that makes the best chocolate chip cookies ever! If you bake a batch, they may become a favorite for every boy in your household, no matter what his age.
PHILLY CHIPPERS
1 cup margarine or butter
1 (8-ounce) package Philadelphia Cream Cheese (or your favorite brand)
3/4 cup white sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 (12-ounce) package semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped nuts
Heat oven to 375 degrees. Combine margarine or butter, softened cream cheese and sugar; mix well. Stir in egg and vanilla.
In a separate bowl, add flour, baking powder and salt. Then combine the flour mixture with the rest and mix well.
Stir in chocolate chips and nuts. Drop by teaspoons full onto greased baking sheets. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 to 18 minutes or until golden brown. Makes about 5 1/2 dozen.
