Cheddar Cheese Pan Biscuits

Leader food columnist Kathleen Brotherton suggests dressing up your next meal with these Cheddar Cheese Pan Biscuits.

If you want to dress up an ordinary meal, add some homemade bread – a special treat your family or guests are sure to love. You may choose from a variety of breads to complement whatever main course you’re serving.

Nothing goes better with spaghetti or other types of pastas than some nice crusty bread, whereas yeast rolls are great served with turkey or pork. Biscuits go well with fried chicken or other chicken favorites. If you’re planning to make some kind of fish or seafood dish, you might want to serve it with my favorite – cheddar biscuits.

The cheddar biscuits also go great with barbecue, and you’ll find the biscuits are so tasty they’re even great just by themselves.

This recipe is so quick and easy to make, it’s no problem to whip up a batch, which is good because they’re sure to become a favorite for you, too.

CHEDDAR CHEESE PAN BISCUITS

1/3 cup butter or margarine

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 cups (6 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese

1 tablespoon sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1 cup milk

Heat oven to 400 degrees. In a 9-inch square baking pan, melt butter in oven (3 to 5 minutes). Meanwhile in medium bowl, combine all ingredients except milk.

Next, stir in milk just until moistened. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface. Knead 10 times or until smooth. Pat or roll dough into a 12-by-6-inch rectangle. Cut into 12 (1-inch) strips.

Dip each strip into melted butter in pan. Fold strip in half. Place folded strips in 2 rows in same pan. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until lightly browned. Eat them hot right out of the oven. Makes a dozen biscuits.

Note: For extra flavor, I use sharp cheddar cheese.
