With everyone’s focus on the coronavirus pandemic, it’s easy to lose track that April 15, the traditional deadline to file state and federal income taxes forms, is coming up quickly.
However, both federal and state officials, in light of current events, have delayed the deadline to file returns until July 15.
For both federal and state returns, there is no need to file a form requesting the extension. According to the websites run by the Internal Revenue Service and the Missouri Department of Revenue, the deadline extension is automatic.
Those unable to meet the July 15 deadline, the IRS site says, will be required to file a request for an extension.
The federal and state extensions apply to individual returns, corporate returns and taxes filed by trusts.
IRS officials urge taxpayers who are owed a refund to file as quickly as possible, according to its website.
For those who will owe the IRS money, the site says, penalties and interest on unpaid balances will not be charged until July 16. The same applies to state returns.
